The reflective and automatic brain processes that energize and direct patients’ goal setting and decision-making and their behaviors regarding using digital health. It refers to patients' perceived advantages, perceived disadvantages, and initial mindset

For example, some patients reported DHIs bring them the sense of security, while others perceived DHIs replace the traditional appropriate (face-to-face) health care.

What are positive, negative, and double-edged factors?

These categories were classified into positive, negative, and double-edged factors based on their positive, negative, and diverse impacts on digital PEx. 

  • Positive Factors describe the advantageous or beneficial attributes

  • Negative Factors describe the disadvantages or detrimental attributes.

  • Double-Edged Factors describe attributes that have both beneficial and harmful sides.

PERCEPTION (perceived advantages and disadvantages)

POSITIVE

  • Perceived sense of security, independence, empowerment, convenience and access to care, and less sense of vulnerability

  • Prepared for emergencies or hospital visits 

  • Intact social networks

  • A suitable goal setting

NEGATIVE

  • Perceived no benefits 

  • Perceived threats to security, privacy, independence, or an individual’s sense of identity

  • Worried digital health would replace traditional appropriate (face-to-face) health care services

  • Impede social life or interfere with patient-to-provider relationships

  • Cause additional burden (being bombarded with too many messages)
